Capital City Public Charter School serves nearly 1,000 students in PreK-12th grade through a project-based learning approach, EL Education, that includes a strong focus on social-emotional learning. Since its first graduating class in 2012, 100% of seniors have been accepted to college, and Capital City's six-year college graduation rate exceeds the nation for low-income, first-generation students. Capital City serves a diverse student population that comes from every ward in the city. The school has had eight Posse scholars, three Trachtenberg scholars, one Milken Scholar, and multiple Conway scholars.
Nearly 80% of Capital City seniors are first-generation college students and 30% are first-generation high school graduates. Being the first means students often need help to understand the college process from researching and applying to schools, studying and taking SATs and ACTs, preparing financial and scholarship applications, and much more. At Capital City, we go beyond handing students brochures of colleges that might interest them. During the fall of their senior year, students take an overnight tour of colleges in Maryland and Virginia. For many, this is their only experience visiting schools outside of DC. We also lead parent workshops for all high school students to support families through the financial aid and college planning process.
Capital City spends $197,650 per year to provide a strong college access program for our 333 high school students with a particular focus on our 70+ seniors. This includes a two-person college counseling team. This equates to $593/student, each year. Your donation helps ensure we can keep providing this program for our future graduates.
